FreePBX and VitalPBX are the two most popular open-source PBX distributions built on top of Asterisk. FreePBX is on version 17, shipping Asterisk 21; VitalPBX is on version 4, built on Debian. What They Have in Common
Both FreePBX and VitalPBX are free, open-source web GUIs that run on top of Asterisk. Both support standard PBX features — IVR, ring groups, queues, voicemail, call recording, conferencing, and SIP trunk connectivity. Both run on Linux (typically CentOS/Rocky Linux or Debian). The differences emerge in commercial modules, WebRTC, high availability, and community support.

When to Choose FreePBX
- You need maximum ecosystem compatibility — most VoIP hardware vendors certify FreePBX
- Your team already has FreePBX experience
- You are running a simple office PBX (10–50 extensions) and don't need advanced modules
- You prefer Sangoma's long-term commercial support track
When to Choose VitalPBX
- You need WebRTC without paying for additional modules
- High availability is a requirement and budget is a concern
- You are building a hosted PBX product for resale — VitalPBX multi-tenancy is a commercial module, but the model is cleaner than stacking FreePBX instances
- You want a modern, actively developed platform with faster feature releases
For most new deployments in 2026, we recommend VitalPBX. The built-in WebRTC, HA, and competitive licensing make it better value than FreePBX out of the box. Switch only if a specific FreePBX module or hardware certification is blocking you.
Migration Between the Two
Migrating between FreePBX and VitalPBX requires exporting your extension, IVR, and queue configurations and re-importing them. There is no direct one-click migration tool. SIP trunk configurations will need to be rebuilt. For large installations (100+ extensions), budget 2–3 days of engineering time for a clean migration with testing.
FreePBX remains the safe enterprise choice for organisations already invested in the Sangoma ecosystem. VitalPBX is the better default for new projects — especially those that need WebRTC, HA, or multi-tenant hosting without the module pricing. Both are excellent platforms when configured correctly.
